ஜிப்மரின் இன்னொரு சாதனை

Successful Deceased Donor (Cadaver) Transplantation at JIPMER on 7 TH December 2015.
Kidneys and corneas were harvested from a deceased (cadaver) donor and transplanted at JIPMER,
Puducherry on 7th December 2015. Smt. Andal, a 34 year old housewife from Nedungampoondi village near Thiruvannamalai and mother of two children aged 6 and 4 years, met with an accident while riding pillion on a two wheeler on 5th December 2015. She was referred to JIPMER hospital where she was determined to be brain dead. Upon being informed about this condition of Smt. Andal, her husband Mr. Muthuraman @ Saravanan, her brother Mr. Gubendiran and her relatives Mr. Ravichandran and Mr. Mani expressed their desire to donate her organs and gave written consent for the same. Despite the logistic challenges posed by the prevailing adverse weather conditions in the area and its personnel being engaged in relief and rescue operations, the Director JIPMER Dr SC Parija and Medical Superintendent Dr J Balachander quickly assembled a team of doctors, nurses, technicians and hospital administrators and made arrangements for harvesting and transplantation of organs at JIPMER. Both the kidneys were harvested from the patient and transplanted successfully in two patients with kidney failure and the eyes were sent to JIPMER eye bank. The two patients who received the kidneys are recovering well in the ICU. Despite the adverse weather conditions in the area, the police department of Tamil Nadu lead by Mr. Albert Hendry, Sub-inspector of police, Kilpennathur Police Station, Thiruvannamalai district arrived promptly at Puducherry and provided timely and whole hearted assistance in completing the necessary medico-legal formalities for organ harvesting.

        JIPMER has so far harvested organs and tissues from 20 brain dead patient and transplanted to patients. Smt Andal was the 11th brain dead donor at JIPMER in the year 2015. The family members of Smt Andal, while mourning her untimely demise, thanked the JIPMER authorities for arranging for organ donation and transplantation and the police authorities for timely assistance provided.

 Always wear helmet while riding two wheelers, even as a pillion rider
 Do not use umbrella while riding a two wheeler – you may lose balance and grievously injure
yourself and others

         Dr AS Ramesh (Associate Prof, Neurosurgery), Prof Sunil Narayan (Prof & Head, Neurology) and Dr Friji MT (Associate Prof, Plastic Surgery) conducted brain death certification. Dr Pankaj Kundra (Prof and Head) and Dr Anusha Cherian (Assistant Professor) from Dept of Anesthesiology and Critical Care took care of the brain dead donor in critical condition. The transplantation team was led by Dr LN Dorairajan (Urology), Dr Satish Haridasan (Nephrology) and Drs Satyaprakash and Lenin Babu (Anesthesiology and critical care). Mr. AK Saravanan, Transplant coordinator, JIPMER, Dr Sreejith Parameswaran, Associate Professor of Nephrology and Nodal Officer, NOTTO, JIPMER and Dr MJE Ambroise, Technical Consultant, were responsible for coordinating the whole process at JIPMER.
